So I’ve been thinking about why men can go shirtless and why women typically “shouldn’t” - but in the general case, clothes are needed for both to be modest, to be polite and to be civilized. Hm I’m going to guess there was a definite element of arousal between men and women that are heterosexual - their bodies, their entire being, etc. And then came the assertion of power and the whole male dominance pattern that follows through today; women became objects to an extent, women were prized and held in in esteems fitting for possession and of course, who would want their trophy to be cast in the eyes of all others? NO ONE. So women were clothed in elaborate patterns fitting their desire and so maybe that started the female interest in fashion(just guessing) and the ironic allowances of bikinis and mini-skirts.
That being said, men can go shirtless only if they bring on sexual desires of women(or whomever they want, but in the case of this society, women) and in that way, they possess the desires of women - a definite plus for them.
If a woman were to do that, possibly the first thought would be of shame, lust, a secret and illicit fiendship of the body - a sin in a lot of people’s minds. Pornography captivates the bodies of all; both man and woman because we want that, in varying degrees.
I guess it’s a combination of our “needs”, our desires, the way we choose to live and a whole lot of other factors a lot of people can’t explain, including the roles we place ourselves and others in relationships with one another.
And then this argument could lead into why females can dress in “boy clothes” - large sweaters, jeans, boots, jackets and the like, but a male cannot do the same. A lot of people say because then men would be like women and maybe, if we look deeper at such instances, that would be saying women are below men.
I don’t know. It’s confusing and complicated, but that’s humanity for you.
